I think this is no “merengue”, this is a “salve”.

The is rhythm is a little forgotten. In early years it was played by some orchestres as well. (Best songs to me from Louis Kalaff were always salve). I read once salve is the most dominican rhythm. The rhythm has religious roots (see you tube).
