History – Histoire – Historia
Sofrito is run by DJ’s Hugo Mendez and Frankie Francis alongside The Mighty Crime Minister and designer Lewis Heriz. Sofrito brings together a shared passion for vintage Tropical music and the ethos of the UK underground club scene. DJ sets are built around exclusive dubplate edits, scratchy 45’s and upfront sounds from producers that share our passion for heavy rhythms, all aimed squarely at the dancefloor.
Paris-based Hugo Mendez has worked with labels such as Strut, Soundway, Jazzman & Nascente to produce several compilations of Tropical sounds – including the genre-defining ‘Tumbélé’ compilation for Soundway and the ‘Tropical Funk Experience’ CD for Nascente.
Hackney-based Producer and DJ Frankie Francis runs the Carvery Mastering and dubplate-cutting studios, working on vinyl-retrieval and mastering for labels such as Strut, Sir Collin’s Music Wheel, NYC Trust and many more, as well as cutting dubs for the cream of the reggae and Tropical DJs in the UK.
Illustrator and designer Lewis Heriz works with labels such as Soundway, Stones Throw and Now Again, producing exceptional artwork using a variety of media. His limited edition prints are available to buy here.
Since 2006, Sofrito events have featured guests including Manu Dibango, the Poets of Rhythm, the Souljazz Orchestra, Quantic, Nickodemus and Nappy G (Turntables on the Hudson), Tropical Treats Soundsystem, Natural Self, Combinacion Atlantica, Nick the Record, Prince Fatty Soundsystem, Nostalgia 77 and many more….Sofrito has brought together musicians and artists from Ghana, Nigeria, Cuba, Venezuela and Colombia to celebrate the heaviest sounds from across the Tropical Spectrum.

The Republicafrobeat Vol. 3 album is amazing, as is your track on it! I play them here on the East Coast in the U.S. on two radio shows I produce and out at gigs I do as a DJ. Glad to have found your website, and thanks for the great music!
Comment by Reza Clifton 11.20.10 @ 2:38 amHi there, I’m loving playing your sofrito tropical discotheque album on my little community radio show all the way over the sea in NZ, Waiheke Island.
Compliments the cumbia, kuduro and afro beat sounds well!
Wish I could go check it out in London or NY…
Maybe start one up in Melbourne?
